MEADOWLAKES — A fireplace apparently caused a blaze at a Meadowlakes residence Feb. 2 that damaged a portion of the home, officials said.

Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department crews, along with several other agencies, responded to a report of a house fire in the 300 block of Stewart Street at approximately 7:49 p.m. When crew arrived they found the fire located in the corner of the living room and adjacent master bedroom. GRANITE SHOALS — As Jennifer Hart sifted through the remains of her Granite Shoals home Jan. 30, a few days after a fire ravaged it, she picked up a charred toy. It was a top.

“Hey, look. I found Mom’s top,” she said, holding it up for several friends and her brother to see. Then, she pressed down on the spindle coming out of the top of the toy. It spun. “And it works. LLANO — Firefighters managed to save a two-story home belonging to two Llano educators and their children after a blaze Jan. 28, even as icy conditions caused safety and access issues for volunteer crews, officials said.

GRANITE SHOALS — A woman was able to get out of her home after a fire erupted, but a family member said her dog likely died in the blaze.

Granite Shoals and Marble Falls fire units responded to a fire about noon Jan. 28 at a residence in the 2500 block of Washington Street in Granite Shoals. The blaze destroyed a manufactured home and an attached shop as well as spread to a nearby residence.

BURNET — Icy road conditions have delayed the opening of Burnet City Hall until noon Jan. 28.

MARBLE FALLS — Several area schools are canceling classes for Jan. 28 due to inclement weather.

Marble Falls, Burnet and Faith Academy officials announced the cancellation of classes the morning of Jan. 28. Llano school district is on a two-hour delay. A band of wintery mix during the overnight hours brought freezing temperature and sleet to the Highland Lakes.

The cold should remain through much of the morning with above-freezing temperatures finally breaking through around noon.

BURNET — One of the growing concerns among business and industry leaders is how the United States is falling behind when it comes to producing graduates with science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) degrees. Now, Burnet Consolidated Independent School District is positioning itself to help curtail that assessment.

“Getting kids interested in (STEM) programs has really become a national priority,” said Jim Connor, the BCISD director of secondary curriculum. Recently, the district announced the creation of a pre-engineering magnet program for the next academic year that will give students a chance to pursue STEM studies. SPICEWOOD — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a two-vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man and injuries to a 15-year-old passenger.

The accident happened just before 4 p.m. Jan. 26 about four miles southwest of Spicewood on Texas 71, according to the report.

Wintery weather glazed roadways with ice overnight in Burnet and Llano counties Jan. 24, causing a few issues for motorists on their morning commute. The pickup truck on Texas 29 across from the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office slid off the roadway about 9:30 a.m. into a bar ditch and avoided colliding with other vehicles. Burnet Consolidated Independent School District and Faith Academy of Marble Falls canceled classes for the day, while Marble Falls and Llano ISD announced two-hour delays to the start of school to keep school buses, educators and students off slick roadways.
