LLANO — Aging utility meters have prompted city of Llano officials to propose replacing the devices across the city with high-tech “smart meters,” but some residents have expressed concerns about the potential for higher bills and suspected privacy and health risks.

City Manager Brenton Lewis said city council members will consider an $800,000 loan to pay for the switch to the wireless, remote-read devices. Continue reading “Llano residents fear ‘smart meters’ will hike utility bills”

LLANO — When Fuel Coffee House board member Mark Martin was asked how to describe the eclectic Llano coffee shop, he responded by simply saying, “A community, the coffee is incidental.”

While Fuel Coffee House, 106 E. Main St., offers the typical coffee shop fare, the sign outside describes it as “coffee • music • community,” with each playing a vital role in the nonprofit’s mission. Continue reading “Llano’s Fuel Coffee House fuels people up with more than just caffeine”

MARBLE FALLS — When David Rathkamp first began making beer several years ago from a kit a relative passed on to him, he probably never thought it would eventually blossom into a 10,000-square-foot brewery, but it did.

Rathkamp and his wife, Quynh, are getting ready to open Save The World Brewing Co. in the next several weeks. The brewery, 1512 Resource Parkway in the Marble Falls Business and Technology Park, will specialize in Belgian-style ales. MARBLE FALLS — Supporters of putting a local liquor option on the ballot face an uphill battle as a Jan. 10 deadline looms to gather more than 400 signatures, officials say.

“A number of people in our area (live) outside the city limits,” said Marble Falls Economic Development Corp. board member Jane Marie Hurst. “What we need to do is adequately seek out (Marble Falls residents) walking the streets, door to door, which is my intention.” Continue reading “Microbrewery, Marble Falls EDC circulate petition for alcohol option”

MARBLE FALLS — When Sylvia Weed retired in December after 28 years as the assistant to the superintendent at Marble Falls Independent School District, she probably held the record for the person who attended the most board meetings in the district.

After all, she worked for 10 different superintendents and served countless board members during her tenure. Though Weed wasn’t required to attend those meetings when she first started with the district almost three decades ago, it didn’t take long for her to find her spot in the board room (at the time it was a school cafeteria). The fire occurred about 4:30 p.m. that day in the single-story, four-plex unit in the 100 block of Oakland Street.

No one was inside the apartment where the fire originated, and investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen area of an end unit, said Lealand Raiford of the Burnet Fire Department. Continue reading “Burnet apartment fire starts in kitchen area of one unit, displaces four families”

Franz said the number of cases he’s seeing this year is much higher than what he saw last year, or even the previous year. Continue reading “Highland Lakes doctors report more flu cases this year; shot is the best prevention”
