Burnet apartment fire starts in kitchen area of one unit, displaces four families

FROM STAFF REPORTS

BURNET — Firefighters evacuated four families at an apartment complex where one of the units was destroyed and three others sustained smoke damage Dec. 30, investigators said.

The fire occurred about 4:30 p.m. that day in the single-story, four-plex unit in the 100 block of Oakland Street.

No one was inside the apartment where the fire originated, and investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen area of an end unit, said Lealand Raiford of the Burnet Fire Department.

“All the damage was contained to one unit. We did have some smoke that had moved to the attic in some of the other adjoining units. There was no other damage. We put a quick stop to it,” he said. “All the occupants were re-homed for the evening until they could get the electricity back on and repairs done to the unit.”

The Burnet fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
