TOBEYVILLE — The condition of Horseshoe Bay firefighter Jeff Walker is improving after he was involved in a rollover accident on FM 1980, just west of Marble Falls, according to sources close to his family.About 3 a.m. Aug. 17, Walker was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin after the 2011 Dodge pickup he was driving left the roadway in a curve about three-quarters of a mile from RR 1431, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety report.

BURNET — Llano Independent School District teachers are free to use CSCOPE lesson plans following a court ruling Aug. 16 after several residents filed a lawsuit trying to stop the practice.

But the use might be short-lived if opponents to the CSCOPE lesson plans have their way.

MEADOWLAKES — A lifetime golf club membership agreement with dozens of residents survived another budget cycle after the Meadowlakes City Council voted down by a slim margin an attempt to suspend the program connected to Hidden Falls Golf Course and Country Club, officials say.

However, the green-fees waiver for lifetime memberships is expected to be reviewed again before the end of the year.

BURNET — The Burnet Fire Department has long responded to mutual aid calls outside city limits, but now it will receive money from the county for those services.

LLANO — The Llano Independent School District has stepped into the middle of a battle brewing over CSCOPE lesson materials, criticized by conservatives as “anti-American” and “hidden away from public scrutiny.”

On Aug. 9, a state district judge granted Llano attorney Tim Cowart a temporary injunction against use of materials associated with CSCOPE in Llano ISD classes, pending an upcoming hearing.

MARBLE FALLS — The city of Marble Falls has instituted mandatory water-use restrictions Aug. 12 as drought conditions continue and the two reservoirs fell to their lowest levels in several decades.

City of Marble Falls residents now must follow Stage 2 water-restriction requirements that include limiting lawn irrigation to twice a week based on residential addresses. Users may only water between midnight and 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and midnight on the relevant days.

BERTRAM — Burnet County schools are giving a revision to the old stand-by of reading, writing and arthithmetic thanks to a federal grant to provide enrichment programs and opportunities for students.

“It’s not even outside the box, it’s throwing the box away,” said Jason Zoll, Bertram Elementary’s after-school coordinator.

BURNET — The first day of school is only a couple of weeks away. But it’s only one day that parents and students should keep in mind before classes start.

Several campuses hold events before the first day of class to help parents and students including Meet the Teacher days and “fish camps.” Each gives students who are new to a campus or a class a chance to look around and get a feel for the place.
