BURNET — The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center fills a tremendous need within the community when it comes to working with abused or neglected children along with their non-offending family members. It’s sometimes one of the first stops for a child who has been victimized or witnessed a violent crime.

One reason the Burnet facility has become a haven for youth is because of the efforts of the staff and volunteers to make it feel safe, warm and inviting.

This includes a playroom full of toys, games and stuffed animals.

The staff hopes people will take a moment during the Christmas season to look at the center’s “wish list” on its website (hccac.org) under “Donate” to learn how they can help.

“This community is amazing,” said Doris Graeter, the center’s development director. “Anytime we need something, the community is always willing to help out.”

But the needs are ongoing.

Some of the things the center has on its Christmas list include:

  • kids movies (DVDS rated G and PG only)
  • journals (boys and girls)
  • action figures (for boys)
  • new stuffed animals
  • games
  • books for kids 12 and older
  • toy trucks and cars

“We can always use more office supplies like paper and things like that,” Graeter added.

The Hill Country Children’s Advocacy Center serves Blanco, Burnet, Llano, Lampasas, Mason and San Saba counties. Graeter said that, during the course of the year, they help hundreds of children, though not all of them are victims. The center also provides services for victims’ siblings and non-offending family members.

“And we’ll always accept monetary donations,” Graeter added.

Go to hccac.org for more information or to view the center’s complete list.
