World War II veteran Herschel Leon Pruitt, 89, of KingslandWorld War II veteran Herschel Leon Pruitt, 89, of Kingsland was awarded the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Distinguished Citizens Medal, which was presented to him by Llano Uplift chapter regent Georgi Brochstein at a Jan. 24 meeting. Pruitt served aboard the USS President Jackson from 1943 to 1945. He piloted a Higgens boat, also known as a landing craft, during island assaults. He is the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with eight stars, the Navy Occupation Medal, the Pacific and China Service Medal, two Presidential Citations and six Bronze Stars. Also in attendance at the ceremony were his wife, Nancy, and family members Rod Pruitt, Kathy Pruitt and LeAnn Pruitt. Courtesy photo
