LLANO — There’s more to the Friends of the Llano County Library’s “Souper” Supper Smack Down than tasty soup.
The Feb. 12 event at the library, 102 E. Haynie St., is the largest fundraiser of the year for the group, according to Friends president Jeanne Puryear. A $5 donation lets attendees enjoy a large sampling of soups.
And the winner gets to dish out a big bowl of bragging rights.
“It gives our group a chance to show off our cooking skills,” Puryear said. “People like to make soups and like to eat soups.”
The judging public will be given samples of each soup — about 15-20 — and then will choose their favorites. Library staff will tally the results and announce the top three. The winning soup’s recipe will be published in the library newsletter.
Puryear is making her classic baked potato soup, following the same recipe she’s used for years, with sides of grated cheese, chives and sour cream. Typically, her soup finishes in the top three each year, she said.
“It’s lots of fun,” she said about the contest. “It’s gotten better over the years.”
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with door prizes given away every 15 minutes. Jazz singer and saxophonist Jim Wynne will entertain from 6-7:30 p.m.
“People just love it,” Puryear said. “He’s great. We’ve had him several times.”
Money raised will go toward library renovations that include new furniture and carpet, Puryear said. The projected start time for renovations is in 2016, she said.
While cooks are competing for prizes, Puryear said the big winner is the Llano County Library and its Friends group, which believes the facility is an important part of the community.
“We work tirelessly for our library,” she said.
