BURNET — A new turn lane is coming to the dangerous Texas 29 intersection where two Burnet High School siblings lost their lives earlier this year.

The construction at 29 and CR 252 won’t be finished until August 2013 just before school starts, so in the meantime there will be other traffic-control measures in place.

Members of Grace Sanctuary felled a cottonwood tree June 12 near Avenue L and Ninth Street as part of the 2012 Lone Star Sun Dance ceremony. The group, which incorporates Native American traditions, includes prayer and dances as part of the annual ceremony. June 12 is Tree Day. The tree will be taken to Grace Sanctuary’s ceremonial land in Lampasas for the rest of the observance, which lasts through June 16. For more, visit www.gracesanctuary.com. BURNET — Heavy security was in force during a hearing for a man accused of wounding three family members — including his 8-year-old cousin — with a shotgun.

BERTRAM — A 59-year-old Bertram woman died June 9 after her car was involved in a collision with a train.

The accident occurred about 12:50 p.m. on CR 269, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Susan Schmidt died at the railroad crossing on 269, which is just north of Texas 29 and east of the city limits.

MARBLE FALLS — Local merchants shouldn’t fear that a retail-recruitment firm hired by the Economic Development Corp. will bring big-box stores to crush “mom-and-pops” so long as they direct the EDC to find businesses matching the community.

That’s the lesson offered by other Texas economic development directors who have already worked with The Retail Coach, a national firm recently retained for $35,000 by the Marble Falls EDC to collect “demographics on steroids” that could attract new businesses — including large, corporate retail chains — to potential profits in Marble Falls.

The trick, said San Saba Economic Development and Tourism Director Tony Guidroz, is to make sure local EDC board members hear and understand the will of the people — or in this case, the already established merchants who form the economic backbone of the city.

MARBLE FALLS —Work is shifting from the south end of the U.S. 281 bridge replacement project to the north, meaning the blue cranes will have to be taken apart and reassembled.

That process could take two to three weeks, said Jason Cavness, project engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation.

LLANO – The two leading vote-getters will still face each other in the July 31 GOP runoff in spite of a recount in the Llano County Precinct 1 race, officials said.

Peter Jones and Tom Engler remain the candidates with the most votes after a manual recount June 6, election officials said.

A third candidate — Clayton Leverett — failed to gain any additional votes.

GRANITE SHOALS — City Manager Judy Miller has received a letter from the City Council addressing nine performance goals and giving her 30 days to comply after residents criticized Miller for being out of touch.

"The letter was approved by council addressing performance issues with Ms. Miller," said Mayor Dennis Maier. "I hope we can work together to resolve any issues."

After meeting with Miller in executive session, the council issued the letter May 31 listing nine areas of concern. During council meetings May 18 and May 22, several residents voiced issues with how Miller dealt with phone calls, volunteers and projects.
