MARBLE FALLS — Penny Ney admitted that, when she was growing up, her house was a bit dysfunctional. But the one thing from which she drew strength was music. Her first guitar, a beat-up one she received in her teens, helped Ney transform her life into something more than some might have expected.

Now Ney, who returned to the music scene after a break to raise her own children and manage a ranch, wants to again use music to help heal. This time, her focus is on others. Continue reading “Lone Star singer-songwriters team up for Rose of Texas benefit”

MARBLE FALLS — Smiles as bright as two million lights shined on Marble Falls on Nov. 21 as the Christmas Light-Up Parade opened the Walkway of Lights.

The parade traveled along Main Street as former city manager Ralph Hendricks served as grand marshal.

The Walkway of Lights, along Lake Marble Falls at Lakeside Park, 307 Buena Vista Drive, is open 6-10 p.m nightly through Jan. 1, 2015.

Last year, Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce events coordinator Julia Adams said about 41,000 people visited the Walkway. That was despite it being closed seven days because of rain. Of that number, Adams said only 12,000 came from the Highland Lakes area.

To welcome that many people to Marble Falls, greeters with a personality as bright as the Walkway are needed.

“It’s a lot of fun, and you meet people from a lot of different parts of the world,” Adams said.

Although it might be a bit cold, the job isn’t a difficult one.

“Someone with a happy face who likes to talk to people,” Adams said. “You ask how many are in their party, if they’re staying in a local hotel and just say ‘please donate.’”

Greeters work two-hour shifts, either from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. or 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. To volunteer, call the chamber office at (830) 693-2815.

Santa makes an appearance on weekend nights plus Thanksgiving night. The full schedule is at www.walkwayoflightstx.com.

If you just enjoy strolling the Walkway, be sure to check in advance that weather has not forced it to close. Updates will be posted at www.walkwayoflightstx.com or the event’s Facebook page by searching “Walkway of Lights-Marble Falls.”

Well, as luck would have it, the Florida Boys are back in Granite Shoals for a fundraising concert benefitting the Granite Shoals Fire Department. Which kind of explains the red suits (it matches the red fire trucks.) Continue reading “Florida Boys return to Granite Shoals for benefit concert”

MARBLE FALLS — When “The Nutcracker” first entertained an audience on Dec. 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, things were a bit different than they are today. But that hasn’t diminished the love people still have for this traditional Christmas ballet as it continues to take the stage around the world.
