LLANO —  The Llano Heritage Festival Chuck Wagon Cook Off is set for this weekend at Llano River State Park.

Sculptor Marla Ripperda admires the work of one of her fellow artists during the Uptown Marble Arts Alliance’s 4th Annual Sculpture on Main Saturday in downtown Marble Falls. LLANO — A retired Llano County deputy accused of shooting a dog through the neck because it went to the bathroom in his yard has been indicted, investigators said.

Melvin Lawson, 66, faces up to two years in a jail if convicted of cruelty to animals in the death of a 2 1/2-year-old Pekingese mix named Munchee Aug. 2.

MARBLE FALLS — Putting the brakes on traffic snarls like the ones seen during the Sept. 10 record-breaking attendance at the Marble Falls High vs. Burnet game Sept. 10 is easier said than done, school officials said Monday night.

MARBLE FALLS — Nationally known comedian Steve Trevino will take to the stage Oct. 8 at the Uptown Marble Theater for a night of laughs and fun, organizers said.

HIGHLAND LAKES — The news revolution has started — Tribune Headline News is now airing on Northland Communications cable channel 15 featuring your local news, your local sports, your local weather and your local programming.

"It’s online and on TV," announced Amber Alvey Weems, the president of Victory Publishing Co. Ltd., which produces THN and its network, The Picayune TV.

Other programming includes The Pressbox sports show; Extra Credit about local student activities; and more to come.

"This is truly a milestone. No one else is doing anything like this in the Highland Lakes," said Editor Thomas Edwards, who oversees news coverage for Victory.

Launched two years ago on the Web as part of www.thepicayunetv.com, the newscast and other shows will still be available online.

Victory is a family-owned company based in Marble Falls, and started 20 years ago with the creation of The Picayune newspaper by Dan and Lee Alvey.

MARBLE FALLS — The author of a book about an Amish Christmas will kick off the autumn round of special lunch programs at the Marble Falls Public Library Oct. 15.

HIGHLAND LAKES — Even as remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine moved out of Central Texas Wednesday, the Lower Colorado River Authority opened floodgates on Lake Marble Falls and Lake LBJ as a second day of pounding rain gave way to occasionally blue skies.


The Lower Colorado River Authority opens one and a half gates at Max Starcke Dam at Lake Marble Falls Wednesday. The river authority also opened one Wirtz Dam gate at Lake LBJ to allow water to pass through the two lakes along the Colorado River to Lake Travis. A second day of rain from Tropical Storm Hermine along the Sandy Creek watershed and Flat Creek watershed triggered the floodgate operations.
