BURNET — Ten athletes from the Burnet High School girls track team are headed to the Class 3A Region I Meet in Lubbock.

The 10 — seniors Eden Sultemeir and Kerstyn Towslee; sophomores Kimberley Kyle, Taylor Rowe, Chelsea Bates, Shannon Dyer and Leah Cotton; and freshmen Riana Bond, Mariah Qualls and Bryanika Grady — qualified at the District 8-3A Track Meet hosted by Burnet Wednesday and Thursday.

Sultemeir placed second in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 2 inches, while Towslee and Kyle took first and second places in the pole vault with heights of 10-0 and 8-6, respectively.

Both are making a return trip to the regional meet. Sultemeir advanced to the state meet in Austin a year ago.

Rowe qualified in four events. She was runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 34-3 1/2 and placed second in both the 300-meter hurdles (47.80 seconds) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.50 seconds).  Rowe joined Grady, Cotton and Bond in the 4×400-meter relay for a silver finish with a time of 4:14.2.

Two other relay teams earned their way to Lubbock. The 4×100 relay team that included Bates, Qualls, Bond and Dyer swept the competition for the title with a time of 52.12.  The 4×200 relay team, comprising Bond, Qualls, Cotton and Dyer captured second place in  1:51.8.

“We had many other competitors that were really close to qualifying for the regional meet and are sitting as alternates,” said coach Doug Messer. “We are very proud of our Lady Dawgs and their successes.”

As a team, Burnet finished second with 125 points behind Liberty Hill, which amassed 117 points. Llano was third with 95 points followed by Leander Rouse and Leander Vandegrift with 92 and 81 points, respectively.

In the junior varsity division, Burnet’s girls claimed the District Championship “in style,” Messer said. Rouse finished second, followed by Liberty Hill, Vandegrift and Llano.
