The Highland Lakes Crisis Network is holding a screening of “Take a Chance on Me,” a documentary on America’s foster care system, on Thursday, April 27, at the Uptown Theatre, 218 Main St. in Marble Falls. The short film will be followed by a panel discussion. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the screening starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 each.

The HLCN is sponsoring the event in conjunction with fostering Hope Austin and The Archibald Project

KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune’s Mac McClennahan spoke with Crisis Network Executive Director Kevin Naumann and Treasurer Bob Rogers about the educational event.

“Our hope is we just get as many church people and as many Christians as we can there just to learn about it, even if you go away from that day and just think, ‘Wow, that really is a problem,” Naumann said. “Just raising that awareness is something because, somewhere along the way, God will connect you with somebody who’s interested in getting plugged in, and you can help share the word.”

The night will begin with friendly chat over free food provided by Bear King Brewing Co. The 30-minute film, produced by The Archibald Project, begins at 6:30 p.m. It details the harrowing journey of Darien, a 10-year-old child searching for a foster family.

“If you come to our film, I encourage you to bring a handkerchief or a box of Kleenex because you may need it,” Rogers said. “It’s a conversation starter.”

Once the screening wraps, a panel of local foster care experts will offer their own insights into the system and answer questions.

Attendees can purchase beverages at the theater’s bar. Free childcare is available at Lake Shores Church, 700 U.S. 281, if reserved in advance.

The theater plans to host similar events in the future.

“We want to be a part of the community and give anything we can,” Operations Manager Andrew McCarroll told DailyTrib.com. “We have a unique space to host events like these. Anything we can do to support the community, we’ll do.”

  1. Wow, this looks wonderful. I am unable to attend but would love to see something like this in the future.
