MARBLE FALLS — As LakeFest enters its 19th year this weekend, the annual drag boat races have added a new sponsor that could bring more competitors roaring across Lake Marble Falls, officials are hoping.

MARBLE FALLS — A budget shortfall could force the Marble Falls High School Daycare Center to close by year’s end, but only if a nonprofit agency can come to the rescue of affected students and their children.

LLANO — The resignation of yet another prosecutor has created a critical personnel shortage at the District Attorney’s Office and the potential for a legal logjam in area courtrooms.

MARBLE FALLS — When Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast Aug. 29, 2005, and drowned New Orleans, it sent a congregation searching for a new home — which they eventually found in the Highland Lakes.

MARBLE FALLS — The case of a teen girl severely beaten by gang members after she decided to drop out is just the latest warning sign that gang activity is on the rise in the Highland Lakes, officials and parents say.

HORSESHOE BAY — City Hall this month will be the site of a free two-day course to help patients manage Type 2 diabetes.

The “Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes” workshop will offer information for diabetics to make healthy food choices, manage medications, avoid eye and foot problems and get enough exercise.

The course is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 7 and Aug. 14 at No. 1 Community Drive, next to the fire station on FM 2147.

“An excellent assortment of health-care professionals affiliated with Llano Memorial Healthcare System will be available to serve as instructors,” said Marilyn Hale, the Llano County Texas AgriLife Extension Office agent.

Nurse Diana Tarvin will present “Diabetes and Exercise.”

“Managing Your Blood Glucose” will be addressed by physician’s assistant Jinny Sumrall.

Pharmacist Jennifer Lockmiller will discuss diabetes medicines.

Dr. Peter Davenport will provide information on preventing and managing complications.

Kelly Tarpley, a licensed dietitian, will shed light on topics related to nutrition and diabetes with four presentations: “Nutrition, the First Step to Diabetes Management”; “One Diet – No Longer the Sole Option”; “For Good Measure at Home and Eating Out”; and “Nutritional Levels.”

Though there is no charge to attend, pre-registration is required so that enough handouts can be prepared.

MARBLE FALLS — A two-vehicle collision on Texas 71 early Friday claimed the lives of a Marble Falls High School senior and a dump-truck driver just starting his third year of employment with Burnet County.
