MARBLE FALLS — Of all the great things Marble Falls High School head baseball coach J.T. Blair saw from his team during the weekend, what impressed him the most was pitching.
That’s because the Mustangs used several arms in wins against Liberty Hill 11-1 and Boerne High 7-6 on Feb. 23. The Mustangs beat Hutto 6-5 on Feb. 21.
Even in the lone loss to Houston Second Baptist 6-4 on Feb. 22, Blair said he left the encouraged.
“We got real strong outings from our pitchers all weekend,” he said. “I was most pleased with the pitching. Top to bottom, every game, no matter who was on the mound, our pitching gave us a chance to win every game.”
The coach said the turning point on Feb. 23 occurred in the fifth inning against Boerne High. The Mustangs trailed 6-1 but scored three in the fifth inning and three in the sixth.
“We were getting guys on base and started getting big hits,” he said.
Against Liberty Hill, the pitching numbers may not have been staggering, but Blair said the most important elements were played on the field.
“They were putting the ball in play, and we were making plays,” he said. “When you start making plays, that’s when you start winning games.”
