SAN ANTONIO — After barely qualifying for the final of the 110-meter high hurdles at the Class 4A Region IV Track and Field Meet, Marble Falls High School senior Willie Nelson didn’t accept that.
In fact, Nelson did something about it, finishing fourth in 15.43 seconds.
“He felt really good, really happy,” head coach Kyle Futrell said. “He ran as good a race as he’s ever run. He just didn’t quite make it.”
The hurdlers brought out the best in each other, the coach said, which is why he was so pleased for Nelson.
“He ran really well,” Futrell said. “It was tight, tight, tight between second, third and fourth.”
Zach Winbush of San Antonio Clemens won the event. He had the fastest time headed into the regional meet at 12.20 seconds. Trevor Hayes of Hutto, the District 25-4A champion, was third.
Junior pole vaulter Shiloh Ribera did not clear the opening height of 12 feet and was out of the competition after three attempts.
“He just didn’t make it out today,” Futrell said. “He had a bigger pole. Pole vaulting is one of those events that it just happens. He was as high as he’s been. That’s what happened.”
