The Hill Country Humane Society, 9150 RR 1431 West in Buchanan Dam, is waiving adoption fees for adult dogs and cats through May 15 during a nationwide campaign to help overcrowded shelters.

The Highland Lakes animal shelter is partnering with BISSELL Pet Foundation for the latter’s Empty the Shelters event and will offer free adoptions for adult pets. Puppies and kittens are just $50. All animals come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

The shelter is open daily from noon to 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome. Adoptable pets can be viewed online at www.hchstexas.com.

“Our shelter is full of incredible dogs and cats who are already fully vetted and just waiting for someone to give them a chance,” said HCHS Executive Director Paighton Corley in a media release.

The campaign comes at a critical time for the Hill Country Humane Society, which has already taken in 534 animals in 2025, an overwhelming number for a facility with only 55 kennels. The shelter contracts with local governments to take in stray animals.

“We’re so grateful to BISSELL Pet Foundation for continuing to stand behind shelters like ours,” Corley said. “This event makes a huge difference. Not just for the pets who find homes, but for the community we serve.”

Since its launch in 2016, the Empty the Shelters campaign has helped more than 323,000 animals find homes. The program partners with over 815 shelters in 49 states as well as Canada, easing the strain on overcrowded facilities and promoting affordable adoption.

“Every time we host Empty the Shelters, it affirms the importance of this lifesaving program,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in the media release. “During the two-week event in May, tens of thousands of pets of all kinds, many who’ve waited far too long, will find the loving homes they deserve.”

Hill Country Humane Society has participated in the campaign multiple times, resulting in more than 70 successful adoptions.
