Cavs hold on for win against Marble Falls junior varsity boys

LAKE TRAVIS — The Marble Falls High School boys junior varsity basketball team lost to Lake Travis 46-42 on Feb. 10 at Lake Travis High School.

The game could have been a replay of the previous meeting between the two teams, in which Marble Falls took an early lead, held on to the lead into the fourth quarter and then saw the game slip away in the closing minutes of the contest.

The Feb. 10 game started well for the Mustangs as junior guard/forward Nick O’Connor opened the game with a 3-pointer. Sophomore guard Ben Stripling added two more 3-pointers in the period, and sophomore post Keith Jerome scored another. In all, the Mustangs hit 4-of-8 three-point shots but wouldn’t connect on another until the final minutes of the game.

Marble Falls maintained a seven-point lead going into the final period, but the Cavs came back.

Mustangs sophomore point guard Aidin Parnell scored eight fourth-quarter points, though Marble Falls trailed by six with less than a minute remaining.

Parnell hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key that was matched by sophomore guard Jordan Wright’s 3-pointer 30 seconds later to bring the Mustangs to within two.

After Lake Travis converted on two free throws, Parnell and Wright missed on late three-point attempts.

Parnell led the Mustangs with 11 points, two rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot. Stripling scored nine points, three rebounds and an assist. Freshman post Danny Rivara finished with five points, four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. O’Connor and Wright each dropped in three points and grabbed a rebound, while O’Connor added a couple of assists. Sophomore Steven Petrosky and junior Darius Johnson scored two points each, while Johnson had two rebounds.

Sophomore James Breyer and Rivara shared the team lead in rebounds with four each.

The Mustangs finish out the season against Dripping Springs 6:15 p.m. Feb. 14 at Maxo Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive.
