Lady Dawgs beat ranked Lipan team heading into playoffs
GLEN ROSE — What a difference a week makes.
After losing to Salado 54-51 on Feb. 7, the Burnet High School girls basketball team signaled it was ready for the Class 3A playoffs at the Glen Rose Lion’s Club Playoff Festival Feb. 11.
A 57-52 victory against Lipan, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A Division II, had Lady Dawgs head coach Mike Cavender declaring his squad (18-13, 7-3) was prepared.
"It was a big win for the kids and some nice momentum to go into the playoffs with," he said.
Lipan led throughout the first half — 14-10 after the first quarter and 27-17 at intermission.
That changed in the second half when Burnet outscored Lipan 40-25.
Both teams shot 43 percent from the field and made at least 13 free throws.
Senior guards Leah Cotton and Kati Maldonado led the Lady Dawgs with 17 and 15 points, respectively, followed by freshman guard Riley Scott with 14.
Now Burnet prepares for Wimberley, its bi-district opponent 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Leander Vandegrift, 9500 McNeil Drive in Austin.
The winner faces Yoakum, which received a bye as the District 25-3A champion, Feb. 16 or 17.
