Marble Falls Lady Mustangs head to Mansfield tourney

MANSFIELD — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team will make the annual trek to the Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournaments just south of Fort Worth.

The Lady Mustangs (10-8, 1-1) will begin play against Canyon High, one of the state’s premier programs, at 8 a.m. Dec. 27.

Canyon is ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A poll of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Depending on the outcome, Marble Falls will either face Mansfield Legacy or Fort Worth Dunbar, the squad that defeated the Lady Mustangs in the Class 4A state semifinals in 2007.

Other schools in attendance include Pflugerville, ranked No. 19, and Duncanville, ranked No. 5, in the latest MaxPreps Freeman Rankings; Cibolo Schertz Steele, which defeated the Lady Mustangs earlier this season; and Stephenville, Grapevine, Cedar Hill and Mansfield.

"It’s tough every year," Lady Mustangs head coach Stephanie Gamble said. "It’s always going to be competitive. The best way to get into the shape is to play."

She said Mansfield Timberview and Mansfield Summit also will be teams to watch.

She is hoping for a better finish than last season when the Lady Mustangs closed out at 1-3.

"Last year we were so young and having so much to learn we struggled," she said. "We’re going to keep getting better. It’s an opportunity for us to bond with each other."

Gamble said several college coaches and scouts will be in attendance.

"It’s going to be a good tournament," she said. "We have to go out there and compete. It’s a great opportunity."
