Faith tennis player has success in USTA tourney

TEMPLE — Reagan Vaughn of Meadowlakes is having success in the off-season after he “champed up” Sept. 11 at the Heart of Texas Tennis Zone Area Tournament.

Vaughn is a sophomore at Faith Academy and competed in the boys 16-year-old division.

He earned a bye in the round of 32 because he was seeded No. 1 and faced familiar faces in the tournament.

In his first match, he beat Nicholas Janssen of Georgetown 6-4, 6-2. Vaughn competed against Janssen in the District 4-2A tournament in April.

Vaughn defeated Brandon Gandy of Fort Worth 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 in his second match.

With temperatures nearing 100 degrees, Vaughn beat friend Price Carpenter of Burnet 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the semifinals

He lost to No. 5 seed Clayton Jones of Austin 6-4, 6-0 in the finals.

Vaughn qualified to compete at the champ level of the United States Tennis Association Major Zone Tournaments where he can qualify to move up to the “super champ” division.

Vaughn is a sophomore at Faith Academy, where he plays basketball, tennis and is a member of the praise band. He is coached by Horseshoe Bay Resorts head tennis pro Aland Price and director of tennis Michelle Stallard.
