Manzano qualifies for 1,500-meter final
EUGENE, Ore. — Former Marble Falls High school track standout Leonel Manzano is one race closer to qualifying for the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships.
Manzano finished second in the second heat of the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships Thursday.
He posted a time of 3 minutes 40.07 seconds behind Matthew Centrowitz, who won the heat in 3:40.
Andrew Wheating posted the fastest time in the event in 3:98.88.
Manzano’s former high school coach, Kyle Futrell, said he was not concerned about the qualifying time.
“He can run faster than (3:40),” he said. “(The World Championships) are so far away. He cannot afford to go out there and take it to the heat right now. Saturday is the big meet. It’s how you qualify.”
The 1,500-meter men’s final is scheduled for 4:51 p.m. Saturday, June 25, on NBC.
