Marble Falls High School hosts a track-and-field invitational Thursday, Feb. 27, marking the 2025 season opener for the team. Girls’ head track coach Brenda Gonzalez shared her goals, what it means to host the invitational, and her excitement for the start of the 2025 track season.
The team’s first meet of the season was originally scheduled for Feb. 20 at Jarrell’s Cougar Stadium, but that was canceled due to weather. Now, the Mustangs get to open 2025 competition in front of the home crowd.
“We’re excited to see the athletes compete for the first time this year and gauge their progress,” Gonzalez told DailyTrib.com.
Being at home makes the first meet even more meaningful for track-and-field athletes.
“Our freshmen are eager to experience their first high school meet, and our seniors are excited to compete in their final home event,” Gonzalez said. “Unlike other sports that have multiple home games, track and field typically only has one. … This is our chance to put on a great performance in front of our home crowd.”
For the coaching staff, organizing an invitational requires significant effort, but it is also rewarding.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s also an honor to bring (other) teams together at our facility,” Gonzalez said. “It allows us to connect with school staff and community members who volunteer to help run events.”
The meet is the first step in accomplishing team goals in 2025.
“The athletes aim to perform well at competition and showcase their hard work,” Gonzalez said. “The bigger picture is excelling at the district meet, advancing to area, regionals, and potentially state.”
As the girls’ head coach, Gonzalez is proud of her team’s progress.
“I’m proud of the growing participation in our program, especially on the girls’ side” she said. “We have a strong core group of athletes who are committed to improving. Additionally, (boys’ head track) coach (Austin) Silva and our assistant coaches do a fantastic job preparing our team for success.”
