BURNET — Although the Burnet High School girls basketball season ended in February at the Class 3A Region I semifinals, the legacy of this season’s squad continues to grow with some Lady Dawgs receiving statewide postseason honors.
Brooke Rockafellow and Stormie Wilfong have been named by the Texas Girls Coaches Association to the Class 3A Basketball Academic All-State Team. To qualify, Rockafellow and Wilfong had to maintain a class average of 94 or higher.
“This is a very special achievement, being able to maintain such a high level of commitment in the classroom with all the time and hard work involved, not to mention the time and workload associated with athletics,” said Mike Cavender, Burnet High School girls athletic coordinator and head basketball coach.
For her extraordinary court performances, senior point guard Shay Graeter has been invited to compete in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star game slated for May 21 at Trinity University in San Antonio. Contests will be held for both boys and girls in two divisions, Class 1A-3A and one for 4A-5A.
Graeter joins Texas’ premier senior players from Class 1A-3A. The no-admission games start at 2:30 p.m., with the Class 1A-3A girls.
“I am extremely proud of these young ladies and the honors they have received,” Cavender said. “It’s been a privilege over the years to be a part of their careers at Burnet High School.”
Graeter also will sign to play basketball for McLennan Community College in Waco 3 p.m. Thursday, National Junior College Signing Day, at the coaches’ offices at The Doghouse gymnasium, 1000 The Green Mile.
