The Burnet Consolidated Independent School District recently adopted a slightly lower tax rate for the 2026-27 fiscal year as compared to last year’s rate to fund a roughly $58.5 million budget approved in June.

The approved tax rate, sitting at a total of $0.8673 per $100 property tax valuation, was unanimously adopted by the BCISD Board of Trustees during a Monday, Aug. 17, regular meeting.

The rate consists of two categories–maintenance and operations (M&O), and interest and sinking (I&S).

M&O taxes, consisting of $0.6723 of the approved rate, can only be used to fund day-to-day operations. I&S taxes, consisting of $0.195 of the approved rate, can only be used to pay down debt.

Here’s a closer look at how the approved FY 2026-27 rates compare to FY 2025-26:

FY 2026-27

  • Total tax rate – $0.8673 (0.42 percent decrease from FY 2025-26)
  • M&O rate – $0.6723
  • I&S rate – $0.195

FY 2025-26

  • Total tax rate – $0.871
  • M&O rate – $0.676
  • I&S rate – $0.195

When the board discussed the now-adopted FY 2026-27 budget, administration officials noted that M&O taxes were expected to pull in roughly $37.5 million in revenue. I&S taxes were expected to draw $10.64 million in revenue, with several million additional dollars coming from state and federal sources to round out its budget.

In approving the new rate, the district has officially made good on its promise to voters to not raise the tax rate following the passage of the $135 million bond package, which was approved in May.

“We are keeping our promise to the tax payers that we would not raise the tax rate when the bond was passed,” the item reads.
