Margaret Batts Duncan “Meg” Stephens, 66, died March 2, 2011, from complications of multiple sclerosis. She was born Feb. 14, 1945, in Burnet.

She was raised in Burnet County on her family’s ranch.  She grew up with a deep appreciation of the land and outdoors, which continued during her life.  Horseback riding, fishing and being in the bluebonnets were things she truly missed but was unable to do because of her condition.

Her “beautiful daughters and handsome son” and their accomplishments were her pride. Her 30-plus years struggle with multiple sclerosis was challenging, difficult and, at times, heroic.

Her faith was strong at the time of her death.

Survivors include daughters Margaret-Lynn McDoniel and husband Mike, and Caroline Duncan Tinkle; grandchildren Katie and Ross McDoniel; sister Caroline Duncan Bradshaw and husband Ron; brother Donald C. Duncan Jr. and wife Ellen; other relatives; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Margaret Duncan, and son William Rufus Stephens Jr.

The family wishes to thank Martha, Cathy and all the caring staff at Retirement and Nursing Center in Austin, her home for the last 11 years. Also, thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice of Austin, Peter Maxson, Jack Taylor and Petie Miller.

A special thanks to Marva “Cookie” Cooper, her sitter, companion, confidant, and sisterly friend for more than 20 years.

Visitation is 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 5, followed by the recitation of a rosary at 7 p.m., Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 Texas 29 East in Burnet, (512) 756-2222.

A memorial service is 1 p.m. March 6 at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers include her grandson Ross McDoniel; nephews Cameron, Hal and Bowie Duncan; son-in-law Mike McDoniel; and brother-in-law Ron Bradshaw.

Her ashes will be placed on the family’s D Cross Ranch in Burnet County.

Donations can be made to Heart to Heart Hospice of Austin, 4029 S. Capitol of Texas Highway, No. 120, Austin, TX 78704; a local hospice; The National MS Society, P.O.
