Granite Shoals continues efforts to improve water infrastructure on the east side of town, seeking a $8 million state grant to upgrade the system and increase capacity.

City Council approved a resolution during its July 28 meeting to apply for funding through the Texas Water Development Board’s Water Supply and Infrastructure Grant Program. If awarded, the grant would cover 100 percent of the project’s costs and would not require a local funding match.

The proposed improvements would focus on the area south of Kingswood to Hillwood Drive, where existing water lines range from one-half inch to 2 inches in diameter. The current system does not provide enough capacity to meet future needs and lacks sufficient fire hydrants for adequate protection.

If awarded, the project could include replacing smaller water lines with larger 6-inch lines, installing additional fire hydrants, and constructing or improving an elevated water storage tank. Other related water system improvements may also be included. Any grant agreements and project plans would return to council for consideration and approval before work begins.

In October 2024, the city completed 0.28 miles of waterline upgrades along Kingswood Drive, from the intersection of Kingswood Drive and Kings Circle Drive to Kingdom Drive. The project replaced a 2-inch waterline with a 6-inch line and added three new fire hydrants, in an effort to tackle longtime water system issues.
