The Granite Shoals City Council voted unanimously during its Jan. 13 meeting to decrease the number of regular city council meetings from twice a month to just once a month.
The remaining meeting on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. will still take place, with the new meeting schedule to be implemented following that meeting. The schedule has not yet been determined.
Councilor Judy Salvaggio said the change could help improve efficiency.
“I think it would help save some time, and time is money,” she said during the meeting.
Salvaggio also commented on how smoothly recent meetings have gone.
“We’re out of here by 8 to 8:30 p.m. all the time, and in previous meetings, way back before even (former City Manager Peggy Smith), they ran a bit late,” she said. “We had some interesting things going on back then, but it’s been going quite smooth (in recent meetings).”
City staff surveyed several local governments in the Highland Lakes area to gain a better understanding of meeting frequency and found it was relatively split between councils meeting once a month and those meeting twice a month.
For reference, Burnet and Marble Falls meet twice per month; and Horseshoe Bay and Llano meet once per month.
According to City Manager Sarah Novo, staff did not have an opinion on the change and deferred the decision to the council.
Council members determined that if there were ever a large amount of business to address, the council could call a special meeting to handle the workload.
