Paul Kaurin of Meadowlakes passed away Jan. 31, 2025

Paul Kaurin of Meadowlakes, Texas, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Friday, January 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a heart event and aortic valve failure. Paul was born March 25, 1944, in Wendell, Idaho. Lewistown, Montana, was home until he enlisted in the Navy in September of 1963 after graduation from high school.
Paul excelled in the Navy and served in the nuclear submarine service aboard the USS Permit. He was honorably discharged in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he married Carleen Winslow. Thanks to the GI bill for education, Paul immediately enrolled in school at Northern Montana College, Havre, MT. Interspersed with employment Paul earned his BS in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Metropolitan State College, Denver, CO, in 1975. Paul’s working years were adventuresome and varied. His employment included, Western Electric, Aurora, CO, Henderson Molybdenum Mine, Dillon, CO, Westinghouse, working on the Washington, DC Metro Brake System, and Voice of American (VOA), America’s radio voice overseas, under the Executive Branch of the US President. VOA led to assignments in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. He retired in 2001.
His retirement years were equally varied and interesting. After retiring, he redesigned and expanded their home in Vienna, VA, completing almost single-handedly as much of the construction as possible. When finished in 2015, Paul and Carleen moved to Marble Falls, Texas, to be closer to half of his grandchildren at that time. With time on his hands, Paul rekindled a love for astronomy. Vacant lots across the street and permission to mount a telescope were the perfect scenario for Paul to peer more deeply into space and the wonders of God’s Universe. He eagerly shared his viewing with anyone out for a walk or interested. At the same time, he became an avid SpaceX fan, understanding the science and technology of it all well. Paul rarely missed the frequent rocket launches, marveling after each launch as if it was the first one he saw.
Paul will be missed by his family, church, small group, neighbors, friends and stargazers! He is survived by his wife, Carleen, daughters Heidi Smith (David), twin granddaughters Hope and Nora Smith, Kristine Anderson (Brian), grandchildren Alyssa (Jonathan) Moon and great-grandson Asher, grandson Benjamin (Sarah) Anderson, and twin granddaughters Jenna and Elliana Anderson, Laura Verkaik (Daniel) and grandchildren Quincy, Millie and Judah Verkaik. Paul is also survived by his only sibling, Ronald Kaurin and wife Sandy, and multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial and burial to honor and remember Paul is planned for May 27, 2025.
The memorial service will be held at Lake Shores Church, 704 U.S. 281 in Marble Falls at 10 a.m. His burial with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. at Central Texas State Veteran’s Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, TX 76542.
