UPDATE: More auditions set for ‘Destry Rides Again’ music
UPDATE May 9, 2022: The Hill Country Community Theatre has scheduled another round of auditions for “Destry Rides Again: The Musical” at 7 p.m. Monday, May 9, and Tuesday, May 10. Keep reading for what to expect at the open auditions.
PREVIOUS STORY: The Hill Country Community Theatre is holding open auditions May 2-3 for its boot-stompin’ summer musical, “Destry Rides Again.” Auditions start at 7 p.m. each day at the theater, 4003 FM 2147 in Cottonwood Shores.
Those auditioning are asked to prepare a song they are familiar singing without music. Guest directors Jordan Jones and Christine Ashbaugh will be filling roles for a large, all-ages cast of both men and women.
“Destry Rides Again” was first a 1939 moving starring James Stewart and then a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical in 1959 with Andy Griffith.
The story centers on the town of Bottleneck, now being overrun by the nasty Kent gang, which has taken out the sheriff. The new sheriff, Tom Destry, hopes to save the town without using a gun and falls in love with the sassy saloon girl.
“We are so excited about this show,” said Patty Gosselin, the nonprofit theater’s executive director. “It has such an impressive history, and who in Texas doesn’t love rooting for the peace-loving sheriff in a Western?”
“Destry Rides Again” runs July 15-Aug. 7 at the Hill Country Community Theatre. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
