BURNET — The Burnet High School girls basketball team hung on for a 48-46 win against Brownwood to start District 8-3A on Jan. 4.

With the Lady Dawgs trailing 46-45, Burnet sophomore point guard Riley Scott hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key with 14 seconds remaining.

The Lady Lions called a timeout and worked the clock for the final shot, which turned out to be a lay-up. The ball rolled around the rim and popped out, allowing Burnet to clinch the victory.

The Lady Dawgs built a 40-24 lead to start the fourth quarter, but the Lady Lions responded by limiting Burnet to one shot on offense and turning defensive stops into offensive buckets.

“We lost the momentum of the game early in the fourth quarter and couldn’t get it back,” Burnet head coach Mike Cavender said. “We missed some opportunities that could have helped us manage the fourth quarter better. You could tell it was the first varsity district game with how tight we played the first 12 minutes and how hesitant we played the last six minutes with a lead.”
