Take the family to Longhorn Cavern State Park

See the Highland Lakes from the inside at Longhorn Cavern State Park. The 645-acre park features daily tours with plenty of local legends to go along with the geology.

The outlaw Sam Bass and his gang are reputed to have hidden there from the law in the days of the Old West. American Indians held powwows there, and Confederate soldiers used the caves to make gunpowder. During Prohibition, the underground refuge was a speakeasy. A large room in the cavern was used as a ballroom. The Austin Paranormal Society even offers ghostly tours.

You’ll find lots to do above ground as well — hiking, bird-watching and picnicking, just to name a few.

The park, which is only closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, is located on Park Road 4 in Burnet County about six miles west of U.S. 281.
