Hays Consolidated 75, Marble Falls 44 on Nov. 13

BUDA — The Hays Consolidated Rebels scored 18 points in the first quarter, needing only eight minutes to surpass the point total of the entire first half for the Marble Falls boys basketball team in a game Nov. 13.

Still, Mustangs head coach Neil Laminack said he left the gymnasium encouraged. The reason is because Marble Falls is still learning the first-year coach’s defensive schemes and didn’t get that many open shots, remedies that can be fixed.

"It wasn’t for lack of effort," he said. "We’re a little behind on the learning curve. We’re playing a … team that made open shots and didn’t make mistakes."

With the football season ending Nov. 9 for the Mustangs, players have had only one practice together because of those who participate in both sports, though Laminack didn’t use that as a reason for the setback.

"They tried to do everything we told them to," he said of his players. "We’ll shake the rust off and get the legs back. We’ll be fine."

Frederick Filsoof led the Mustangs with 14 points.

Marble Falls is at Corpus Christi King, 5225 Gollihar Road in Corpus Christi, noon Nov. 17.
