Lady Flames golfers make it to state tourney in their first year
MARBLE FALLS — In its first year, the Faith Academy girls golf team has advanced to the Class 2A state tournament of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
On the boys side, senior Peter Perkins finished second individually with a 78 to return to the state tournament for the second consecutive year.
"He was behind first by one stroke," Faith athletic director John Berkman said. "He played an incredible round the entire day."
The Lady Flames shot a 473 led by senior Beth Ann Berkman’s 87, which is a new personal best, to finish fourth overall. Freshman Taylor Denton shot a 108, while freshman Rachel Love and junior Courtney Cozby each shot a 139.
"Beth Ann, being a senior and playing golf all four years, she’s done a good job all year," said John Berkman, her older brother.
The athletic director said he couldn’t be prouder of the Lady Flames for making it to the state tournament in their first ever season.
But it did happen once before, he said. The Faith boys golf team advanced to the state tournament in 2009 in its first year.
The regional tournament was played at Quail Valley Golf Course in Missouri City.
The state tournament is at Stonetree Golf Course, 1600 Stonetree Drive in Killeen, April 23-24.
