Mustangs defeat Bulldogs in last seconds of rivalry game

BURNET — As usual, the game was decided at the horn with the Marble Falls High School boys basketball team defeating Burnet 44-42 on Dec. 6.

With 2.4 seconds remaining and the Mustangs trailing 42-41 to Burnet, they called a timeout.

Burnet guard Grant Cole had just hit a layup, with the Bulldogs coming back from as much as a 19-point deficit. Burnet then forced the Mustangs to go the length of the court to hit the game-winning three-point shot.

Mustangs coach Bruce Etheridge drew up the play, calling for senior guard Clynt Powell to throw the ball to sophomore swingman Garret Gray at midcourt. He then had the option of passing to another teammate on his left or right.

Gray chose to pass left, finding sophomore guard J.T. Watson, who was making his first varsity appearance.

Watson took the pass and shot the ball just before the horn sounded as Bulldog players rushed to him.

It hit the backboard squarely and fell in, causing players, coaches and students to rush the court in celebration.
