Inexperience a hurdle in Lady Stangs’ loss at classic

SEGUIN —There are moments still when the Marble Falls High School girls basketball team shows its youth.

For example, take Thursday’s two games at the Matador Classic.

The Lady Mustangs (6-6) led Schertz Steele 42-38 headed into the final period. But Steele went to a full-court pressure defense and scored 16 points in the final seven minutes for a 58-51 victory, thanks to getting steals and converting them to buckets.

“I thought we played a good 28 minutes,” head coach Stephanie Gamble said. “When we did things right, when we executed, we were leading almost the whole game. They started trapping us and we started making bad choices. When it got a little physical down the stretch, we didn’t respond.”

Junior post Kiara Etheridge led with 26 points, followed by sophomore guard Sarah Stripling with 15, sophomore forward Haley Stephens with eight and junior guard Katy Bartels with two.
