Clinic’s aim is to help swimmers

BURNET — With the aim of spreading the love of swimming, athletes are invited to a free competitive stroke clinic 9-10:30 a.m. July 20 at Galloway Hammond Recreation Center.

The clinic will be taught by Longhorn National Team coach Doug Rusk and age group coach Mike Laitaia at the center, 1601 S. Water St.

The two coach Longhorn Aquatics, a program devoted to helping middle school and high school swimmers, according to volunteer parent Amanda Hughes.

“It’s kind of a hybrid,” she said. “The age group starts at 7 to 18. They would send out coaches to the Hill Country area from the state from the main location at the University of Texas.”

Her son, Jacob, 10, started swimming when he was 7, she said and now is a registered swimmer with USA Swimming, the governing body of the sport. He competes at Fort Hood, the University of Texas, Belton and other meets across the state.

“With the Longhorn program coming, we’re hoping they can reach a broad area,” she said. “When you have the name Longhorn, it opens up more doors. It’s a win-win for the kids.”
