Ponies are district champs
Jason Edwards dominated the first drive with at least five tough runs that led to a six-yard touchdown, coach Kevin McLean said.
Rex Prince, Michael Ratliff and the rest of the offensive line had a great first half, he said.
The Ponies’ second score came on 50-yard pass from Stacy Heinatz to Nick Carter. The Ponies went to halftime with a 14-0 lead.
Westridge struck early in the third quarter with a trick play to cut the lead to 14-8.
The Ponies went on two long drives but did not score because of penalties and Westridge’s efforts, McLean said.
Westridge went on a two-minute drive to win the game, the coach said.
With the ball on the 10, Daniel Osornio came up with a big stop, McLean said, to keep Westridge out of the end zone.
The defense played well all night, the coach said. They were lead by Tyler Fry, Adrian Battles and Osornio, who had his best game, McLean added.
“A special thanks goes to coach Mickey Hughes who let us steal his B team quarterback Jay Watson, who split time with Heinatz in the first half and played well, completing a big third pass to Ray Baltazar,” McLean said. “Thanks to all the players for coming through in some tough situations this year. Winning district is icing on the cake.”
