MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team discovered a lot about themselves in a scrimmage against Llano Nov. 4.

It was a controlled scrimmage, which means they played four 10-minute periods, then went full court to two 20-minute full-court sessions. 

Marble Falls outscored Llano, 33-27.

“Everybody played a lot of minutes,” head coach Stephanie Gamble said. “We were feeling it. We did some good things with the first five.”

The starting five included Katy Cooke, Lindsay Ansley, Katie Mosher, Diana Fonseca and Amanda Gray. 

Gamble said one of the hurdles for the Lady Mustangs is developing a sixth player.

“Our defense looks great,” the coach said. “I was really pleased with our man-to-man. We were right there in the right place.”

She said some adjustments need to be made, but because the players showed a clear understanding of what coaches are looking for, it will be easy to correct.  

Cooke and Mosher ran cross country this season, but Gamble said basketball is different because of the constant starting and stopping on the court. On a cross-country course, runners can find a pace and stay there.

But she liked the fact the two were not winded towards the end of the scrimmage.

“In the last 20 minutes, … they still had the ability to push the ball,” the coach said. 

She also liked how the players executed the offense.

“We did a much better job of being patient and allowing things to happen,” she said. “We took advantage of the other team getting winded.”

Gamble also discovered the players need to continue to condition.

“I felt we did a great job on the half-court sets,” she said. “When you’re tired, blocking out is the first thing to go.”
