Granite Shoals pickup soccer club brings women together

What started as one woman’s desire to play soccer again has grown into a weekly gathering that brings women from across the Highland Lakes together on the field.
Every Sunday at 5 p.m., women of all ages and skill levels meet at Quarry Park, 2221 N. Phillips Road in Granite Shoals for pickup soccer, a group started by Citlali Jaramillo to provide a local place to stay active, meet new people, and share a love of the game.
“I stopped playing for eight years, and then after having a baby, I wanted to find a way to stay active,” Jaramillo told DailyTrib. “I love playing soccer, it’s one of my passions, and I wanted to continue doing that.”
After stepping away from soccer, Jaramillo longed to return to the sport, but didn’t want to travel to Austin to find a pickup league. Instead, she decided to start one in the Highland Lakes.
The weekly games now draw women of all skill levels from Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Kingsland and other surrounding communities.
“They get in their cardio and get to enjoy something they love, even if they’ve never played before,” she said.
To spread the word, Jaramillo created a Facebook group and reached out to local soccer players, who began inviting friends and helping the group grow. While attendance varies from week to week, the welcoming atmosphere remains the same, with others at the Quarry Park fields frequently joining in.
The players keep score, but Jaramillo said the games are about much more than winning. Her goal is to create a place where women can stay active, reconnect with the sport, and build friendships on and off the field.
