Bulldog tennis nets first district win, hopes to build steam

The Burnet High School tennis team recently netted its first district win this season, highlighting steady growth as the team eyes a better finish than last year.
On Monday, Sept. 14, Bulldog tennis served up a strong battle against Jarrell, taking down the Cougars 16-3. The team’s developing sense of pride and support for one another was paramount to securing the win, head coach Jayci Craig said.
“Our team is beginning to mesh together as a true team,” she said. “Our athletes are learning to cheer each other on, support one another, and celebrate each other’s successes regardless of grade level. Watching that team chemistry develop has been incredibly rewarding, and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to be these kids’ coach.”
Craig also recognized the week’s ace, Vae Untermeyer, whose performance in doubles and singles matches helped give the Bulldogs the advantage.
“Vae competed extremely well, earning victories in both her singles and doubles matches,” she said. “(Her) competitive spirit, resilience, and willingness to keep pushing are exactly what Bulldog tennis is all about.”
The team’s win was a big step in the right direction for a program continuing to grow and reach for success. Earlier this year, Craig told DailyTrib that the tennis team had gone from just two athletes on the first day of camps last year to a whopping 18 this fall.
The Bulldogs hope to keep the positive momentum rolling next week at home, ready to face off against Belton New Tech at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24.
