LaNelle Lanier Turner

LaNelle Lanier Turner, 95, of Georgetown died Dec. 18, 2011. She was born in Temple on Jan. 20, 1916, to Arthur Wall and Augusta Lula Monday Lanier.
She was raised in the Oatmeal and Bertram areas until her last year of high school, when she moved to Cotulla. After high school, she attended Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, where she received her teaching certificate. After graduating, she taught elementary school in Oatmeal and at several area schools before taking time off to start a family.
She moved to Alpine in 1951 to be closer to family and taught for the Alpine school district from 1951 until her retirement in 1976. While there, she continued her education at Sul Ross State University, earning her master’s degree in education.
She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Alpine.
She moved Georgetown in 2010 to be close to her daughter.
She also was an accomplished artist and an avid gardener and enjoyed painting, embroidery, needlework, sewing, crocheting and gardening. She passed down her love of artistry to her daughter, teaching her to sew and embroider. The love and tenderness she put into all her projects will be cherished for years by her family and friends.
Survivors include her children Gene Turner and wife Carol of San Diego, Calif., William T. “Bill” Headrick Jr. of Alpine, Judy Turner Sproul of Fort Davis, Diana Headrick Taylor and husband Larry of Oatmeal and Carey Headrick of Artesia, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers and sisters; the father of three of her children, William Headrick, in 1985; and the father of two of the children and the love of her life, Everett Turner, in 1992.
The family will gather 3-5 p.m. Dec. 27 at the Oatmeal Community Building, and services in Alpine will be announced.
Flowers are encouraged. Memorial donations may be made to Sul Ross State University in Alpine or First United Church of Alpine.
