W.C. “Dub” Matlock

W.C. “Dub” Matlock, 93, died Nov. 19, 2011. He was born in Marshall on July 21, 1918, to Joshua Clark and Ora Vance Matlock. He was the oldest of three children.
In 1941, he married Edna Burleson, and they had two sons, Wayne and Larry. The two were married for 16 years.
He married Loraine Agee in 1987. They were married for nine years until her death in 1996.
He graduated from Brownwood High School and from Howard Payne College with degrees in business and science. He also received a degree from Texas A&M University in chemistry.
In 1943, he went into the Army and served in England and Germany until 1945. He returned to school, after the service, earning a doctorate in marine biology at the University of Washington.
Upon his retirement in 1984 from his civil service career as a state construction inspector, he opened Dub’s Lock Shop in Kingsland. He had been a locksmith since age 18, but waited until late in life to take it seriously. He invented the “Pick Trick” which was used to aid in the opening of Chrysler ignitions. During this time, he also tested the water for Kingsland Water Supply Corp.
He was a member of Kingsland Community Church. He served on the Kingsland Water Board and had been on the board of directors for Kingsland Municipal Utility District from 1998 to 2002. He was a member of the Kingsland Lions Club and Cleburne Masonic Lodge No. 315.
Survivors include his son Wayne and wife Ann; grandchildren Terry Barrick and husband Jeff, Amy Matlock, Lori Slough and husband Chad; and nine great grandchildren. He was called “Big Pa Pooh” by the youngest ones.
He was preceded in death by his son Larry and grandson Curtis.
A service is 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at Kingsland Community Church, 1136 RR 1431 in Kingsland.
