Burnet firefighter and EMT killed on the job in Texas 29 accident

LIBERTY HILL — A city of Burnet first responder died after the ambulance he was driving struck a semi-truck about 9 p.m. Sept. 18.
Firefighter and emergency medical technician Daniel Hampton was killed in the accident.
Burnet Fire Department Chief Mark Ingram said the collision occurred in the eastbound lanes on Texas 29 in the 19,700 block between Bertram and Liberty Hill.
Two others in the ambulance — paramedic Timothy Pierce and a patient whose name has not been released — received injuries and were transported to separate hospitals in Round Rock. Ingram said Pierce has been moved from intensive care and is recovering. The patient, he said, is in critical condition as of Saturday evening.
The Texas Department of Public Safety closed the roadway for several hours while they investigated the accident and crews cleaned up a fuel leak. The road was reopened about 2 a.m. Sept. 19.
Ingram said Hampton was a member of the department for two years and was about to take a full-time position with the Brady Fire Department.
“(Hampton) was an outstanding firefighter and EMT,” Ingram said. “It’s a big family, and he was definitely part of our family.”
Hampton is survived by his wife and four children, Ingram said.
Ingram stood in the fire department bay with city officials and Burnet Fire and EMS staff to talk about Hampton.
“This is the worst thing that I’ve ever done in my career,” Ingram said in reference to speaking about the accident. “There are no words to explain how bad this is.”
Ingram said emergency services are being provided by area crews this weekend.
“They’ve offered to stay as long as we need them,” he said. “They’ll definitely stay through the weekend.”
Funeral arrangements are pending. Burnet City Manager David Vaughn said those wishing to support the Hampton family can do so through the Hill Country 100 Club.
“They’ll make sure it gets to the family,” he said.
According to Ingram, a funeral service is 10 a.m. Sept. 24 at Hill Country Fellowship Church, 200 Houston Clinton Drive in Burnet.
