Burnet chamber honors residents and businesses

Jason Edmondson was named the outstanding youth of the year by the Burnet Chamber of Commerce.

BURNET — The 60th annual Burnet Chamber of Commerce annual banquet and awards presentation celebrated the best of the city and the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District.

BCISD Superintendent Keith McBurnett announced the second class inducted into the district’s Hall of Honor:

  • Bill Robertson, a 1977 graduate, as the distinguished former athlete
  • Gene Taylor, who served from 1976-84, as the distinguished former board member
  • Charles Dagher, who has been teaching for 63 years, as the distinguished former employee
  • David O’Leary, a 1998 graduate, as the distinguished graduate. He graduated from West Point in 2002.

“We get to honor several great people,” McBurnett said.

Burnet High School Principal Mark Kincaid announced that Karen Melton is the Educator of the Year. Melton spent 29 years as an elementary school teacher and is now in charge of the Burnet High School focus program.

“We had to lie to her to get her here,” Kincaid said.

The chamber winners include:

  • Leona Williams as the senior citizen of the year
  • Chuck Orr as the rancher of the year
  • Darlene Denton as the Thomas C. Ferguson Citizen of the Year
  • Steve Vollmar as the recipient of the Wallace Riddell Law Enforcement Officer of the Year
  • Michaelanne Page as the outstanding volunteer of the year
  • Jason Edmondson as the outstanding youth of the year
  • Gina Glaeser as the chamber of commerce director of the year
  • Gary Wideman State Farm as the small business of the year
  • YMCA of the Highland Lakes at Galloway-Hammond as the large business of the year

Board of Directors President David Bennett summed up the reason for the evening.

“To honor those who give so much to Burnet,” he said, “who donate their time, money and sweat as Burnetians.”
