OBITUARY: Doris Lorraine Jacobs Manning, 84, of Llano dies Aug. 15, 2014

Doris Lorraine Jacobs Manning, born Sept. 11, 1929, in San Angelo, died peacefully on Aug. 15, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Doris, or “Dodie,” was the widow of Comic Book Hall of Fame artist Russell George Manning (1929-1981), who created the series “Magnus, Robot Fighter” and illustrated newspaper comic strips such as “Tarzan” and “Star Wars.” Doris is survived by their two children, Roger and Melissa.
She met Russ at the Los Angeles Art Institute, and they raised their family in Southern California. After Russ’ death, Doris lived with her daughter, Melissa, in Tucson, Ariz., for many happy years. She was very active in a French language club and enjoyed going to exercise classes and shopping at thrift stores. As Doris’ memory began failing, Melissa moved the family to Buchanan Lake Village in Tow, where Doris enjoyed walking the family dogs in a peaceful country environment. Her last years were spent at the Llano Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she received excellent care.
Doris was a devoted mother, and she was a loyal and dedicated wife to Russ. She is now asleep, awaiting the resurrection promised her by Jesus, whom she loved (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10, John 5:28,29). We know that she will remain in our hearts, and that she is also in God’s memory (Job 14:13-15). We will see her again, when the earth is made a paradise under Christ’s Kingdom, and the dead are raised to everlasting life (Psalm 37:29, Revelation 21:3,4).
Doris’ remains will be interred, together with the cremated remains of her husband, in the Bluffton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
