Lady Stangs beat Del Valle yet again

DEL VALLE — Make it three of the last four.

That’s the number of wins the Marble Falls High School girls basketball team has enjoyed against Del Valle since the 2005-2006 season. The victories have come in the postseason when both squads have battled for the right to advance.

On Friday, the Lady Mustangs, ranked No. 10 in the latest Class 4A poll of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, won, 40-27, over the No. 12th-ranked team in Class 4A.

A very proud head coach Stephanie Gamble said her players competed for 32 minutes and never stopped until the final buzzer sounded.

“I thought we played just outstanding defensively,” she said. “We did an excellent job of controlling the boards and executing our offense.”

Del Valle’s Shanay Washington, who signed to play for Baylor University, scored only nine points, two field goals and seven free throws, in the contest.

Diana Fonseca, Erica De La Hoya and Katie Mosher took turns guarding Washington, who was lined up at the point position at the top of the key.

Gamble said Washington tried to post up in the second half, but by then the Lady Mustangs were in control.

And though the Lady Mustangs found themselves in foul trouble in the first half, they never stopped playing the sound defense Gamble was looking for, she said.

In the second half, the Lady Mustangs had an answer for everything Del Valle tried.

“I thought we did great,” Gamble said. “They did not stop us at all.”

Marble Falls was patient in their half-court sets, passing the ball and waiting for the open shot. Then the shooter would find the bottom of the net.

“We were patient in executing and got some easy layups,” the coach said. “I’m thankful.”

Katy Cooke led Marble Falls in scoring with 12 points followed by Mosher with nine.

“She scored all her points in the third on 100 percent shooting,” Gamble said.

Lindsay Ansley had seven points. Amanda Gray scored six on three pointers in the second and fourth quarters, while Fonseca added four and De La Hoya scored two.

“We’re just glad we got away with the win,” Gamble said. “We’re doing a much better job of coming together and getting the job done.”
