MARBLE FALLS — The Faith Academy girls basketball team, 8-3 overall, will return to the court today after taking a break for the Thanksgiving holiday.

They played a game against Austin Regents, a team that was at the Class 4A state tournament of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools recently, Monday. Results were not available before press time.

The Lady Flames follow that challenge with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at Cherokee tonight.

Then they finish the week by going to the Johnson City Tournament

They will do all of that without a practice after their last game in which they pounded Fredericksburg Heritage, 63-18, Nov. 24.

“That’s a frightening thought to be honest with you,” head coach Jerry English said. “We just have such a big week. And really no practice time.”

They will have a weight-lifting session Wednesday.

The Lady Flames begin the the tournament 3 p.m. Thursday against Rocksprings.

English said he is looking forward to competing.

“I do think that will be a good test,” he said. “It would be one I would really like to do well in. It’s a close tournament. It gives us a look we haven’t seen at all.”

Blanco also will be in attendance, he said, and the two teams could meet in the championship game of the eight-team bracket.

Each squad is guaranteed three games.

“It’s one of those deals you take — a tournament — when you can,” English said.

Practices are used to finetune schemes, technique and fundamentals, he said, while games help players work on their conditioning and build more rapport.

The coach hopes illness does not strike any of his athletes as they play five games in six days.

“I just hope we can hold up to it,” he said. “I’m hoping we’re in decent shape.”

The Lady Flames finished second at the Fredericksburg tournament Nov. 22 after they were fifth in the Bulverde Bracken Christian Schools Tournament Nov. 15.

Junior point guard Kendra Field has been averaging at least 24 points a game thanks to driving to the basket for layups and hitting three-pointers.

Younger sister Brooke Field has been averaging about 12 points a game and grabbed at least eight rebounds a contest.

Other starters include Deanna Hoover, Katie Jung and Laura Lykken.
