Lady Dawgs defeat Killeen for road victory
“We came out very sluggish in the first quarter missing … many easy scoring opportunities under the basket and from the free-throw line,” said Lady Dawg JV coach Doug Messer. “We found our groove in the second quarter to close the gap by two, 17-19, at half and finished with two strong scoring quarters.”
Messer attributed the win to persistence and the team’s fighting spirit.
“We seemed to get stronger as the game was played in all aspects,” Messer said. “We are learning our roles as a part of the whole but all have a willingness to become better. We got contributions from all players for this win.”
The Lady Dawgs were led by Hillary Foster, who had a phenomenal game, the coach said. She pulled in 20 rebounds, scored 16 points, had two steals and recorded a blocked shot.
Anastasia Bingham also had an exceptional performance, he said. She pitched in 14 points, made off with six steals and dished out five assists.
Leah Cotton had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and added two assists and two steals to her sterling play. Kaylee Adams swatted away five shots, battled for six rebounds and scored six points.
Shelby Lastly contributed four rebounds, a steal and two deflections, while teammate Alex Castruita recorded one rebound and two assists. Also contributing were Ashley Doucet with a steal, Peyton Revelle with two points, an assist and two deflections. Makenzie Reynolds added a point, a rebound and a deflection. The Lady Dawgs shot 10 of 24 from the free-throw line and made 19 two-point baskets.
