Santa has new helpers in Burnet County

BURNET —  Two Burnet County Sheriff’s Office employees have launched a new program to give Santa Claus a big helping hand this Christmas.

The Burnet County Santa’s Helpers Program is accepting donations now to help Jolly Old Saint Nick make sure underprivileged children in the county enjoy a merry Christmas.

BCSO administrative secretary Donna Fritsch and clerk Vickie Seiley recently founded the program to replace the discontinued Brown Santa Christmas charity, administered for many years by outgoing Sheriff Joe Pollock.

“We need everything — donations, wrapping paper, scissors, tape, toys — everything,” Seiley said.

The Burnet Chamber of Commerce will commit part of its office at 229 S. Pierce St. to serve as wrapping station and collection point for contributions through most of the holiday period, Seiley added.

Volunteers who want to help the program may contact the Chamber, Seiley said, adding parents may apply for Christmas gifts at the Chamber.

The Chamber can be reached at (512) 756-4297.

The program aims to bring gifts to needy children of all ages, provided parents show proof of Burnet County residency on a bill, driver’s license, report card or Medicaid card, Seiley said.

To raise funds for the program, organizers plan to hold a cake walk during the “Christmas on the Square” celebration Dec. 13 in Burnet, Seiley said, adding donors may drop off cakes for the event at the Chamber on Dec. 12.

Program volunteers will deliver and distribute Christmas gifts from the Chamber Dec. 15-19, Fritsch said.

Donations for the program will be collected during the year, Fritsch added.
