Rabid raccoon found in Granite Shoals
This marks the second confirmed case of rabies in the city in about a month.
Animal Control Officer John Alcaraz said a resident spotted the animal near Norwood Street at Lake Street during daylight hours — usually an indication of rabies.
Officers euthanized the animal and sent it for testing at the Texas Department of Health. The results came back positive Wednesday.
“When you find a high-risk animal during the day, there’s usually a good chance they’ve got rabies,” Alcaraz said. “There are basically four animals you have to look out for: bats, foxes, raccoons and coyotes. If you see them walking around during the day, walking in a daze or in circles, contact the authorities.”
Alcaraz said residents can call (512) 756-8080 to report a suspicious animal. Residents are urged to never make contact with a strange animal under any circumstances.
